About
At present, Dr. Somnath Bhattacharyya is a Professor (since 20th March 2020) in the Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering at IIT Madras. He has joined IIT Madras on 12th August 2015 as an Associate Professor. Before joining IIT Madras, Prof. Bhattacharyya worked as a Reader at TIFR, Mumbai, from May 2009 to July 2015. He obtained B.E. in Metallurgical Engineering from VNIT, Nagpur, in July 2000, M.E in Metallurgy in January 2003 from IISc, Bangalore, and Ph.D. (Doktor der Naturwissenschaften) in Materials Science (Faculty Chemistry) in March 2006 from Max Planck Institut für Metallforschung, Stuttgart and University Stuttgart, Germany. As a postdoctoral researcher, he worked at Forschungzentrum Jülich, Germany, Virginia Tech, USA, and Leibniz-Institut für Oberflächenmodifizierung e.V. (IOM), Leipzig, Germany.Prof. Bhattacharyya’s research activities cover TEM/ STEM method development, simulation and experiments which is interdisciplinary in nature and it spans over materials science, physics, chemistry and nano science. Currently he and his group members are doing research to establish correlation between synthesis-local atomic and electronic structure-pr...
