Welcome to the Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering. We are one of the oldest departments of IIT Madras, established in the same year as the Institute in 1959. In the first few decades of its existence, then known as the Department of Metallurgy, the focus was more on industrial metallurgy. However, over the past few decades, the department changed to the Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering to adapt to the transformations and expectations woarldwide in diverse materials science and engineering areaas. Several faculty members of the department in recent times have taken the lead in establishing prospective centres of excellence in the areas of advanced/correlative microscopy, materials and manufacturing for futuristic mobility that includes additive manufacturing, ceramic technologies and surface engineering.

Prof. NV Ravi Kumar has been elected "Honorary Fellow of the European Ceramic Society". It will be recognised during the XIX th Conference of the European Ceramic Society that will take place from August 31 to September 4, 2025 at the International Congress Center in Dresden in Germany.
Prof. NV Ravikumar have been awarded the "Late Padmashree D.r .T N. Sharma Memorial Award for the year 2024" by the Indian Ceramic Society, Western U.P (Khurja) chapter. The award was handed over during the Centenary celebrations of the Department of Ceramic Engineering, IIT BHU which was accompanied by the International Conference on Frontier in Ceramic Materials (ICFCM 2024) from 16th - 18th December 2024 in IIT BHU.
Prof. Ravi Kumar N V has been inducted as a member of the International Advisory Board of the European Ceramic Society and he will be attending the first meeting on the 1st of Sept 2025 in Dresden, Germany, The invitation was extended to him by Prof. Pavol Sajgalik, former president of the Slovak Academy of Sciences.

We are pleased to inform you that Prof. N V Ravi Kumar has been appointed as "ACADEMICIAN" of the WORLD ACADEMY OF CERAMICS of the class "Science" during the recently held 21st election and approved by the Academy Council meeting held on September 23, 2025. The appointment will be officially awarded during the Inaugural Session of CIMTEC 2026 in Perugia, Italy, June 15-25, 2026. This is a prestigious appointment to the academy and awarded to those who have made an international noteworthy contribution to the advancement of ceramics.

We are happy to inform that our MS Entrepreneurship student, Venu Dhulipalla (MM24S400) working under the guidace of Prof. Parasuraman has been awarded Schaeffler India Social Innovator Fellowship Award for the development of GlareZero, a solution for vision protection from glare during driving. The fellowship includes a grant of INR 1.75 lakh, along with a hybrid mentorship program conducted by IIMA Ventures, IIM Ahmedabad, and access to the Schaeffler India network and partner ecosystem. Hearty congratulation to Mr. Venu and Prof. Parasuraman.

Kumar, a PhD student jointly guided by Prof. Tiju Thomas and Prof. Sreeram, has been selected for the Hindustan Unilever Limited (HUL) Women in STEM fellowship for Women PhD students, as part of HUL's CSR program, by which she will be supported with a fellowship equivalent to the PMRF scholarship.
