If you are a shortlisted candidate, a valid GATE score or equivalent is still required for the following categories:
1. Candidates applying for MS under the Full Time (HTRA) category.
2. Candidates applying for Direct PhD under the Full time (HTRA) category. GATE score (or equivalent) is required for applicants from non-CFTI institutes and from CFTI institutes with CGPA less than 8/10.
3.Candidates applying for Regular PhD under the Full time (HTRA) category. GATE score (or equivalent) is required for candidates with MSc degree or with candidates with Integrated (dual degree) degrees.
Without a valid GATE score or equivalent, you will not be allowed for the written test.

8. Part time scholars residing within the commutable distance from IIT Madras have to submit NOC and permission letter from the organization to do course work. Institute will waive the residential requirement and in that case leave not required for attending the courses.
|Bank details for Travel Allowance (TA) reimbursement for PhD applicants||PhD applicants are eligible for reimbursement of second class single to & fro rail fare from your place of residence to Chennai by the shortest route on submission of your claim in the prescribed format with all relevant particulars (Train No., Coach No. Ticket No. Fare paid, Date of Journey, Station from and to etc.).
A candidate is entitled for a single TA as above even as he / she may attend interview in more than one department in the same trip.

About Prof. E.G. Ramachandran :. Professor E.G. Ramachandran was the first Professor and the first Head of the Department of Metallurgical Engineering, IIT Madras and is considered as the architect of this foremost department in India. He obtained his BSc and MSc from University of Mysore in 1943 and 1944. He got his PhD in 1947 from University of Sheffield. After serving the Department of Metallurgy, IISc, Bangalore as a faculty member for 9 years and National Metallurgical Laboratory, Jamshedpur as Assistant Director for 5 years, he was invited to IIT Madras in 1961 as the first Professor of the Department of Metallurgical Engineering. He was also Director-in-charge of IIT Madras for a brief period. Prof. Ramachandran was a Visiting Professor in Germany in 1968 and in 1977 as an Invitee of the DAAD and the United Kingdom during 1973-74 as a fellow of the Nuffield Foundation. Prof. Ramachandran has dedicated himself to teaching, research and development in Metallurgy in the country and has inspired generations of metallurgists, both old and young. Prof. Ramachandran was elected as the Chairman of the Industrial Metallurgy Division of the Indian Institute of Metals in 1978. The unique status, which his department held in the country and abroad in teaching, research and development work in industrial metallurgy, is eloquent testimony to the success of his efforts. Prof. Ramachandran has published more than 100 papers and is a co-patent holder for ten new metallurgical processes or equipment, some of which have been taken up by industry for commercial utilization. He was the President of the Indian Institute of Metals during 1980-81.

The Prime Minister’s Research Fellowship (PMRF) scheme is aimed at attracting the talent pool from IISc, IITs, NITs, IISERs, and centrally funded IIITs to doctoral (Ph.D.) programs of Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and Indian Institute of Science (IISc) for carrying out research in frontier areas of science and technology domains.
