  • Prof. Dr M. Kamaraj is currently a professor in the Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras), Chennai, India. After completing his PhD at I.I.T. Madras, he worked as Research Engineer at EWAC Alloys Ltd (Larsen & Toubro Ltd.) Mumbai. After his exposure to the industry, Prof Kamaraj continued his research on high temperature fretting fatigue of TiAl intermetallics and steel at the Nagaoka University of Technology and the National Institute of Industrial Safety (NIIS) in Japan. He was a Guest Scientist at Ruhr-University Bochum, Bochum, Germany, where he worked on identifying high-temperature micro-deformation mechanisms of single crystal superalloys. On his return, he served as a visiting scientist at VSSC, Trivandrum, India, and later joined as faculty at I.I.T Madras. Recently Prof. Kamaraj established Cold Spray Technology at IIT Madras (SMART Lab) in collaboration with General Electric (GE) Bangalore.
  • He has more than 25 years of teaching, research, and industrial experience in surface engineering, Tribology, welding, and mechanical behaviour of materials with and without welded joints. Prof. Kamaraj has 254 publications, which include peer-reviewed journal articles (196), international conference proceedings (58) and book chapters (4). He has published four books (with co-authors) on (i) Surface Modified Biomedical Titanium Alloys, (ii) Basics of Surface Technology, (iii) Welding the Inconel 718 superalloy: Reduction of Micro-segregation and Laves Phase, (iv) Welding: Technology and Design (3rd edition). Prof. Kamaraj has been cited Top 2% of scientists from India in Materials (2020). Recently he has been chosen as the occupant of the, E.G. Ramachandran Institute Chair. He is a Fellow of the Indian National Academy of Engineering (FNAE), ASM International, USA, Indian Institute of Metals, The Institution of Engineers (India), and the Indian welding society.
