PhD

Course Objectives: Offering creative, disciplinary and inter-disciplinary research under the guidance of an advisor while gradually developing intellectual independence that is essential for scholarship. Another aspect of the program is the development of oral and written communication at a level that is necessary for writing proposals and internationally peer-reviewed journal articles. Deep knowledge about ethics in chosen field and in academia at large is emphasised in the program.

Direct PhD

Duration: 5 years with fellowship

Entrance: Written exam and interview conducted by the department twice a year in May and November

Eligibility Criteria: B.E/B.Tech/M.Sc with valid GATE score or CSIR/UGC NET/ NBHM or equivalent. A minimum CGPA of 8.0 with GATE score for students from non CFTI institutions. For students from CFTI institutions, GATE score is not required, if CGPA is 8.0 or above.

Features:

  • The overall credit requirement is 72 credits which comprises 45 core course credits, 27 elective course credits and a mandatory course on research methodology.
  • Students are awarded both MS and PhD degrees, for which two additional courses need to be completed.

Regular PhD

Duration: 5 years with fellowship

Entrance: Written exam and interview conducted by the department twice a year in May and November

Eligibility Criteria: ME/M.Tech with department specified cut-off in CGPA or equivalent.

Features:

  • The overall credit requirement is 36 which consist of 18 core course credits, 18 elective course credits and a mandatory course on research methodology.
  • A number of Joint Doctoral and Joint Supervision Programmes exist with various overseas universities.
  • Industry top up scholarships are available for selected students.
  • External PhD programs available for candidates from national labs and reputed industries. Candidate will have to complete one semester of course work in IITM and subsequently do their research work at the place of employment.
