Dual Degree offers BTech and MTech together in the five year programme. The four-semester M.Tech programmes offered is based on the credit system and provide a student with a wide choice of courses. Each programme comprises several core and elective courses, project work and has a faculty advisor to help the students in the choice of academic options for elective courses. Students may be permitted to do their project work in industries and other approved organizations.M.Tech.
Program specifically designed to provide specialized knowledge and equip students to meet the ever-changing demands of industry and academia. The students go through an enriching curriculum that offers them a well-balanced mix of coursework and research. The program is spread over four semesters.

Admissions to the M.Tech programmes are through GATE. Eligibility criteria for GATE qualified candidates are available on the M.Tech Admissions website.
Course Objectives
A Direct PhD student is admitted into dept at large.i.e. no research guide/advisor is assigned to the student during the admission process. Once he/she joins the dept, in the very first week, he/she talks to the professors in the dept. and find a research guide/advisor. If the professor agrees to take the student in his/her research group, he/she will be academic and research guide for teh duration of the students stay here in the dept.
Once the student identifies a research advisor, a Doctoral Committee (DC) is constituted. The three member GTC consists of two professors from MME dept. and the third from other depts. Student, in consultations with his/her advisor and DC then carefully selects the courses that he/she can register for. A Minimum of eight courses(for the entire duration of PhD) have to be credited by the student to fulfil the requirements. DC and the advisor can recommend extra courses in case they feel the student will be beneficiary of it. The courses can be from any dept and not just from MME.

B.E/B.Tech/M.Sc with valid GATE score or CSIR/UGC NET/ NBHM or equivalent. A minimum CGPA of 8.0 with GATE score for students from non CFTI institutions. For students from CFTI institutions, GATE score is not required, if CGPA is 8.0 or above.
Students are expected to clear the comprehensive exam(More details here) before two years from the time of their enrolment into the dept. A student can utmost appear twice for the comprehensive exam. It is generally understood the student embarks on his research topic only after successfully completing the comprehensive exam.
Features
- The overall credit requirement is 72 credits which comprises 45 core course credits, 27 elective course credits and a mandatory course on research methodology.
- Students are awarded both MS and PhD degrees, for which two additional courses need to be completed.
- There will be Two Seminars and a thesis. along with one DC meeting before the end of two years.
Course Objectives
MS or Master of Science(by Research) is a research heavy programme, unlike the traditional course heavy M.Tech programme. MS is also not time bound. While students are funded at utmost for three years, the average graduation time is two and half years.
Once the student is admitted into the dept and identifies a topic and a research advisor, a General Test Committee (GTC) is constituted. The two member GTC consists of one professor from MME dept. and the second from other depts. Student, in consultations with his/her advisor and GTC then carefully selects the courses that he/she has registered. A Minimum of five courses have to be credited by the student. GTC and the advisor can recommend extra courses in case they feel the student will be beneficiary of it. The courses can be from any dept and not just MME .

- Students can also choose to convert to PhD Degree at the end of their first year provided they satisfy certain criterion.
Course Objectives
Offering creative, disciplinary and inter-disciplinary research under the guidance of an advisor while gradually developing intellectual independence that is essential for scholarship. Another aspect of the program is the development of oral and written communication at a level that is necessary for writing proposals and internationally peer-reviewed journal articles. Deep knowledge about ethics in chosen field and in academia at large is emphasised in the program.

Eligibility Criteria:
ME/M.Tech with department specified cut-off in CGPA or equivalent.
Features
- The overall credit requirement is 36 which consist of 18 core course credits, 18 elective course credits and a mandatory course on research methodology.
- A number of Joint Doctoral and Joint Supervision Programmes exist with various overseas universities.
- Industry top up scholarships are available for selected students.
- External PhD programs available for candidates from national labs and reputed industries. Candidate will have to complete one semester of course work in IITM and subsequently do their research work at the place of employment.
